EMCC Global Research Conference

Celebrating and flourishing: A Dialogue Between Research & Practice in Coaching, Mentoring and Supervision

8th September 2022

Why attend

Who is this conference for?

  • Supervision, Mentoring and Coaching practitioners who recognise the importance of evidence-based practice and its impact on clients
  • Researchers in mentoring, coaching, and related disciplines, who want to make an impact in practice by sharing their findings with practitioners in a meaningful and practical way.

Why do we need to close the gap between research and practice?

Bridging the often perceived gap between research and practice is possible, and we have evidence for that in the person of the late Dr Anthony Grant a pioneer in inclusive dialogue. As an esteemed practitioner, he not only contributed valuable research for a relatively new scientific field. Through his work, he has shown that a mutually beneficial collaboration between practice and research is possible. By celebrating his work and hearing from some who worked with Anthony Grant, we hope to inspire more of you to follow in his footsteps.

Why is collaboration good for change?

Change is not only something we respond to, we can also drive it and give direction to innovation. For this, both practitioner and researcher perspectives are needed because practitioners often are the first to identify needs or trends to better support our clients while researchers can benefit from producing impactful research that supports such innovation.  That is why this dialogue – and your voice in it – matters.

But I’m not a researcher and don’t speak the “research lingo”, what would I have to say?

If this statement resonates with you, then you are not alone. Indeed, some volunteers of the EMCC Global Research Development Group are practitioners first and only later found their way to research because they see a need for a solid evidence base for their practice. Doing research yourself is not a pre-requisite to contributing to the development of an evidence base that helps further our profession. Engaging in dialogue and exchanging ideas, knowledge and practitioner experience are essential to:

  • Co-create an agenda for collaborative research to address complex challenges
  • Take practical steps for shared capital that benefits ourselves, our clients and our community
  • Challenge the false dichotomy between practice and research

What if I’d rather listen?

Listening is a core competence in our profession, especially active listening. You are welcome to apply your active listening skills to the dialogue and ask practitioners and researchers your powerful questions. In this conference, we also offer Drop-in Sessions where you can ask (almost) anything and members of the EMCC Global team will aim to answer your questions.

Will there be CPD certification?

There will be a reflective question at the end of each session for you to complete to gain a CPD certificate for participation in the conference.

How can I share my research?

We invite anyone undertaking research into coaching, mentoring or supervision to submit a poster to show case their work and its impact on practice. You might be a researchers, post graduate student or researching practitioner, it makes no difference, use this opportunity to share your research with others. You can submit a poster using our template or add a short no more than 3 minutes recording to explain your research. These will be available in our virtual poster gallery throughout the conference. Winners will be invited to write an article for our website to reach out to our members. The winning posters will be the best explanations of research impact on practice.
